At a Glance - Spring 2018

Central London Retail Report Spring 2018

The Central London retail market remained relatively resolute in the opening months of 2018, despite occupational wobbles in the wider UK retail sector.

  • Economy: The pressure on the consumer eased slightly in the opening months of 2018, with inflation reducing and real wages showing signs of growth. As a result, consumer confidence has picked up over the course of the year so far.
  • Occupier: A slight decline in occupational demand from mainstream operators over 2017 has carried through into the opening months of 2018, with a continued undercurrent of retailer caution impacting occupier activity.
  • Investment: Despite the slowing retail market, the West End remains in high demand with investors, being generally viewed as more insulated from sector restructuring than the rest of the UK market.
