Making Places: The Tomorrow Shopping Centre

The curious investigation into how we make great places for people.

Welcome to ‘Making Places’, an investigative series looking at how we make great places for people. Our mission is to unlock a cross-industry dialogue that brings together the movers, shakers and curators who make the places we frequent every day.

This time, we are talking about 'The Tomorrow Shopping Centre'. As consumers, we don’t require as much retail space as we thought in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. Shopping centres are cost challenging. Many of the brands who made the centres possible decades ago have abandoned them in favour of out of town schemes or online. Undoubtedly, action needs to be taken with regards to shopping centre space and in some cases, this must be radical.

There are significant challenges, but with retail continuing to morph and evolve, we must begin to create and curate flexible space that will be as appealing to its consumers tomorrow as it will be in a decade.

For this edition of Making Places, we have brought together a host of like minded specialists, all of whom have explored their ideas, thoughts and concerns on how we create a truly future-proofed Shopping Centre for tomorrow.
