Retail Market Update Q2 2019
This report provides an update on the UK consumer, plus an overview of the current occupational dynamics and investment markets.
- Economy: Consumer confidence fell again in June 2019, dropping to -13 according to GfK. Despite this, retail sales witnessed another fairly strong period of growth in June, with sales up 3.8% compared to June 2018.
- Occupier: In terms of footfall, the UK retail market did not fare well in June 2019 with a fall of 2.9%, the largest decline for seven years. The majority of retail formats saw shopper numbers falling - high streets were the worst affected declining by 4.5%, shopping centres falling by 2.4%, whilst retail parks were up slightly by 0.1%.
- Investment: Investment into the UK retail market picked up in Q2, with £1.40bn invested over the period. This represented a 56.9% increase on Q1 2019.
