Housing the Nation Summer 2011

Housing supply across England - June 2011

A range of key industry figures and MPs has provided their views on how the Government will reconcile localism with the continued need for quality housing and economic growth.
- The undersupply of housing is well recognised as a problem for the UK economy, which has one of the lowest housing vacancy rates in the EU at just 3%.

- Successive governments between 1993 and 2010 tried to use the planning system to stimulate housebuilding.

- On entering Government in May last year, the Coalition proposed a completely different approach by abolishing housing targets and all regional planning.

- Compounding this problem is the recent steady reduction in housebuilding, a 40% drop in only three years.
